Unit information
Are you interested in learning about the ten socio-cultural norms of the oldest living civilisation of the world, with the second largest economy and a super-scale market of 1.4 billion population?
This unit is designed to help you gain a mastery of China’s inherited cultural values, along with a competitive edge in interacting with Chinese people in high-employment areas such as tourism, cultural activities and business practices.
You’ll develop your knowledge of key Chinese socio-cultural norms with a firm foundation in topics ranging from mannerisms, privacy, humility, inside and outside, implicitness and face through to money, spouse preference and social hierarchy.
You will also sharpen your Chinese reading comprehension and writing skills and develop a well-rounded understanding of socio-cultural norms in China today.
This study can be expanded upon in the companion unit CHIN370/570: Social Culture in Chinese Reading II.

Good Universities Guide 2024Studying online
At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
