Unit information
What is gender? How is gender linked to sexuality, ethnicity, embodiment and environment?
These are some of the big questions asked in this unique interdisciplinary offering. The unit provides a lively introduction to key theories of gender from a range of perspectives, including philosophy, sociology and literary studies.
Explore concepts like the gender binary, equality, nature vs culture, and the development of diverse bodies and identities. You will consider the links between gender, colonialism and kinship, examine the similarities and differences between feminist, queer and anti-racist struggles, and read poetry and ask how language itself shapes our thinking about these issues.
Offered as a foundation to major in Gender Studies, this unit can also be taken as an elective by those who would like to support their professional development with a better understanding of these issues. It will equip you with a set of powerful analytical tools useful for negotiating contemporary and future changes regarding gender in life and work, while engaging with some of the most urgent and important contemporary political and social debates.

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
