Unit information
This unit follows on from GEOL223. It introduces you to real-word research in the geosciences linking you with established and up-and-coming researchers and industry professionals across the fields of geology and palaeontology.
The unit combines seminars, tutorials, and hands-on field, laboratory and/or workplace experiences to teach transferable skills in research methodology and effective scientific communication.
This unit focuses on teaching you how to form connections between industry and academia, and develops important skills for your employability as a graduate. You will keep a portfolio of your key skills, reflect on your ongoing development and keep a record of your self-evaluation over the progression of the course.

Enrolment in this unit is mandatory for all students enrolled in their third year of study towards the Bachelor of GeoScience.
The School of Environmental and Rural Science considers all seminar and tutorial activities as essential to student learning. Attendance and participation in all sessions is mandatory - exemptions will not be granted without supporting evidence.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- articulate a basic understanding of geoscience and its associated research processes and practical applications;
- demonstrate an ability to communicate science;
- explain the role that geoscience plays in academia, industry, and society in general; and
- experience the research environment through situated learning (learning in context)
