Unit information
Are you interested in research in environmental and rural science but don't know where to start? Develop the high-level skills you will need to undertake further research in topics you are passionate about.
In this unit you will learn and follow the systematic steps involved in applied research, giving you a real sense of what life as a researcher is like in your specialised area of study.
With the opportunity to explore project development from conception through to manuscript drafting, lectures and course material are integrated with hands-on experience. The unit helps you to develop specialised research knowledge and technical skills that are relevant to your study goals.
Intended as a bridge to further research studies, you will be able to fine tune the critical thinking, planning and scientific communication skills that are critical to successful research.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate specialist research knowledge and technical skills in the planning, design and analysis of a research project in a specialist area of study;
- demonstrate a theoretical and conceptual knowledge of, and critically reflect on, scientific literature and research as it relates to the specialist area of study;
- critically evaluate issues contributing to the professional and ethical standards of practice expected in the specialist area of study;
- demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge to new developments in the specialist area of study;
- apply communication skills to convey literature, methodologies, conclusions and professional decisions resulting from the research; and
- demonstrate an ability to plan and deliver a research seminar.
