Unit information
This unit provides you with a comprehensive investigation of China's engagement with the world since 1978, when China initiated the policy of 'Reform and Opening up'.
It aims to develop your understanding of Chinese foreign policy and the implications of China's rising power and responsibility in world politics.
You will explore four modules, starting with a review of China's historical engagement with the world, and China's recent development of foreign policy making. You will then examine China's relationship with a range of countries and regions, such as Japan, South Korea, Russia, the United States, Taiwan and Southeast Asia nations.
Following this, you will investigate China's involvement in international institutions, such as the World Trade Organisation and the United Nations. Finally, you will assess China's power and responsibility in global governance, particularly in the areas of foreign investment, human rights diplomacy and environmental politics.
