Unit information
Environmental sustainability is critical to the continued success of Australia’s cotton industry and to protect our unique natural environments. Add value to your career with a broad understanding of the aspects of environmental management affected by the cotton industry.
Studying this unit, you will be introduced to key actual and potential impacts of cotton production and learn how these relate to the optimisation of sustainable management practices. You will explore topics including ecology, soil degradation, pesticide breakdown, water quality, salinity, vegetation, legal obligations, farm assessment for environmental status and pesticide application techniques.
With a focus on the Best Management Practices of the Australian cotton industry, the unit offers insights into environmental management systems, extending your ability to formulate possible solutions for problems encountered in the field.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate broad knowledge of the actual, and potential impact of cotton production on the environment, and its relevance to the development of optimal management practices for sustainable cotton production;
- demonstrate an understanding of the Best Management Practices program (BMP) of the Australian Cotton industry in terms of the application of an Environmental Management System (EMS);
- identify and suggest possible solutions to environmental sustainability issues in regard to soils, soil water, salinity, biodiversity and climate;
- demonstrate autonomy and judgement in assessing a farm for environmental status, eg. Native vegetation assessments; and
- communicate information to others, using verbal or written formats, on environmental issues such as water quality and carbon footprint.
