Go beyond the farm gate and add value to your career with knowledge of the business environment and decisions that cotton growers face in irrigated farming enterprises.
This unit extends your understanding of the many integrated aspects of cotton farming systems. You will explore the technical aspects of the cotton fibre for spinning and garment manufacture, learning about current and emerging fibre technologies and strategies for improving economic and environmental sustainability.
Emphasising your development of transferrable skills, the unit provides you with insights into the fundamental principles for economic benchmarking for cotton farms and on-farm consultancy.
In practical activities, you will have opportunities to apply your knowledge and skills, focusing on business, consultancy and communications for real-world scenarios.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate sound knowledge of the business environment in which the cotton industry operates and apply this knowledge and skills in a paraprofessional situation;
- demonstrate an understanding of fundamental principles of some technical aspects of cotton spinning and cotton fibre technology to known and unknown situations;
- knowledgeably discuss the business decisions that face cotton growers in irrigated farming enterprises;
- interpret and communicate to an agriculturally aware audience what is involved in making: recommendations on production, environmental and business for improved economic and environmental sustainability in the cotton industry;
- utilise communication skills to present a clear, coherent and independent exposition of knowledge and ideas in professional report form and orally; and
- apply fundamental principles of economic benchmarking to known and unknown situations on cotton farms.
