Unit information
This unit is designed for students who currently work or aspire to work in agribusiness consulting, advisory or extension roles.
You will examine how agricultural consultants need to be strategically aware of their business and the businesses of their clients, including competitive advantage and opportunities for positive change or innovation.
You’ll cover strategic thinking, business plans, marketing plans, monitoring and evaluation.
Entrepreneurship in agriculture is also introduced, enabling you to think differently when it comes to identifying problems and assessing solutions. Understanding the breadth of media channels and how consultants can use them to their advantage is included, as well as how to handle media issues and create effective media items.
You will also develop an understanding of the legal issues and risk management related to setting up and running an agricultural consulting business, as well as the businesses of clients.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- critically analyse an agricultural enterprise and provide advice against key performance indicators and economic benchmarks;
- demonstrate an understanding of the concept and importance of risk in decision making around agricultural enterprise change;
- communicate professional and ethical consultancy information to clients amidst conflicting sources of reliable information; and
- demonstrate an understanding of the environmental issues and opportunities facing agricultural consultants and apply this to decision making and provision of advice around carbon accounting in farm enterprises.
