Unit information
Understanding the learning needs of children and adolescents as they develop is critical to your future as an educator of young people.
In this unit you will explore the field of Developmental Psychology and analyse a range of theories which explore the different developmental frameworks and physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains.
You will learn about developmental differences and investigate teaching strategies to help you respond to these differences in the classroom. This unit teaches you how to use developmental assessment information to better support student development and learning. You’ll also learn some strategies for reporting results to parents and carers.

This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge of theories and research to explain the sequences of development of children and adolescents and identify factors influencing this development (e.g., physical, cognitive, social and moral domains (GTSD 1.1.1, 1.2.1, 1.3.1, 1.4.1);
- demonstrate knowledge of child and adolescent development to show an understanding of appropriate teaching strategies including differentiation and universal design for learning to promote student participation (GTSD 1.5.1, 1.6.1, 2.1.1);
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of teaching strategies that address developmental differences (GTSD 2.1.1, 2.5.1);
- demonstrate the ability to use developmental assessment information to set appropriate learning goals and improve student learning (GTSD 3.1.1, 3.3.1, 5.4.1); and
- use developmental assessment information to implement a range of strategies to modify student learning plans, and understand strategies for reporting to students and parents/carers (GTSD 5.1.1, 5.4.1, 5.5.1, 7.3.1).
