Unit information
Preparing a dissertation is an enriching intellectual experience. It gives you a taste of academic life and acts as a bridge between undergraduate and postgraduate studies, helping you to finely tune your scholarly research and critical thinking skills.
This unit offers you the opportunity to conduct a detailed investigation into your choice of topic in the field of economics, subject to approval from an academic supervisor.
Undertaking a supervised program of reading, research, data collection and analysis, you will extend your critical thinking and communication skills.
As the culmination to your efforts, you will prepare a dissertation (up to 20,000 words long) and present a seminar to report on your findings, conclusions and recommendations.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- identify an appropriate topic for research;
- develop the ability to adopt appropriate research methodology for a given task;
- critically review literature, and identify and collect data for their research;
- analyse (electronically) the data according to a chosen methodology;
- interpret research findings and report these in a clear and coherent format; and
- exercise critical thinking and judgement to arrive at conclusions and policy recommendations.
