Unit information
Many modern systems use distributed networks of sensors and devices that communicate data to the cloud or a central hub. These architectures have become known as the Internet of Things (IoT). They enable smart automation that can scale from home automation up to smart cities and smart agriculture. This unit explores the technology that enables such distributed systems of sensors. Students taking this unit learn about the communication technologies that enable networks of devices to operate in urban and rural settings. They gain skills in developing applications that use software protocols for working with networks of physical devices. They also learn to work with satellite data. Students will also gain skills and knowledge in the cloud platforms that host and support IoT applications, and security considerations for the design of IoT systems.

Students may be required to purchase their own equipment (IoT devices) to use in assessment in this unit. The equipment to purchase depends on the student's choice of project, so no specific list of required equipment is designated in the handbook. Equipment can be purchased from typical hobbyist and online stores.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- explain common communication technologies used for distributed sensors and devices and their trade-offs, and select appropriate technologies for different settings;
- develop applications that use standard messaging protocols for networks of distributed sensors and physical devices;
- design applications that use data from multiple forms of sensor, for example that take in data from satellites as well as ground-based devices;
- explain and work with cloud platforms that support IoT applications; and
- analyse and explain security considerations with applications that include distributed networked sensors and physical devices.
