Unit information
Hone your ability to foster lifelong learning and support students to become confident, creative users and communicators of mathematics.
This unit introduces you to Junior Secondary Mathematics as a continuum from primary mathematics, investigating philosophical and theoretical perspectives.
Drawing on relevant content from the K-10 Mathematics Syllabus you will explore developmental teaching theories and the psychology of learning mathematics.
With skills to integrate innovative strategies into your teaching as part of ongoing professional development, you will also build skills to design teaching and learning sequences that allow students to play an active role in learning.
You will also learn how to design effective mathematics instructions informed by cognitive load theory, support students to use tools to promote mathematical problem solving and communication and learn strategies for assessment task development.

Good Universities Guide 2024Studying online
At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
