Unit information
Linguistics is the study of language and its structure. It is essential that teachers of Languages are highly skilled in regards to grammar, syntax and phonetics.
This unit adopts a functional approach to linguistics in the areas of context (genre and register), discourse, lexicogrammar, and phonology in order to help you better support your students' learning.
The learning tasks you complete are designed to teach you how to assess the language use of your students and create lessons which help them make meaning in a language which is not their mother tongue.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- describe and analyse the forms and functions of linguistic systems/structures in general and particularly in the language they intend to teach;
- based on relevant theories, concepts and methods critically analyse the language use of language learners in terms of context, discourse semantics, lexicogrammar, and phonology, and use professional knowledge understanding to assess students' achievement;
- demonstrate the application of professional knowledge of language features and patterns to teach their learners how to make meaning in a language which is not their mother tongue; and
- apply independent judgement to implement pedagogical knowledge to language teaching contexts.
