Unit information
To approach your teaching career with confidence, you need an understanding of the processes of school-based teaching and learning. This unit gives you a strong foundation in the theories of learning and explores how to use them in your teaching practice to promote effective learning, specifically related to curriculum outcomes.
The unit explores the relationship between child and adolescent cognitive development and effective learning and gives you some practical classroom management strategies.
You will learn how to encourage high-level thinking in your students and how to explain concepts to your students. The unit will help you plan for social learning (cooperative learning) experiences and guide you in effective teacher and student questioning techniques.

This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- develop learning theory into a coherent and justified teaching philosophy and link it to the elements of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers as a framework for ongoing professional learning (GTSD 1.2.1, 6.1.1);
- apply knowledge and understanding of the stages of child and adolescent development to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities (GTSD 1.1.1, 1.2.1, 1.6.1);
- apply the teaching cycle to plan effective teaching and learning experiences, including assessment, that promote higher-order critical thinking in learners, including the use of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies (GTSD 1.5.1, 3.1.1, 3.2.1, 3.3.1, 3.5.1, 3.6.1, 5.1.1, 5.2.1); and
- apply a range of strategies to interpret assessment data and modify teaching practice (GTSD 5.1.1, 5.3.1, 5.4.1).
