Unit information
As a preservice teacher, your focus in studying this unit will be to build a foundation for teaching science education in years 7 to 10. You will hone your skills to confidently create inspiring and effective learning environments.
Addressing the role and structure of the NSW junior science syllabus, you will develop your understanding of the theories underpinning this specialisation.
Studying this unit, you will develop lesson sequences that incorporate constructivist approaches and examine the role of assessment in informing educational activities.
You will explore occupational health and safety issues associated with the science laboratory and/or outdoor contexts such as the school farm, as well as classroom management strategies important for science education.
By exploring a range of resources, including ICT, you will identify ways to engage students in their learning.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- describe strategies that support students’ wellbeing and safety working within school and/or system, curriculum (including the Life Skills component) and legislative requirements by demonstrating an understanding of legislation, policy and occupational health and safety considerations associated with teaching and specifically in relation to science teaching in schools (GTSD 1.6.1, 4.4.1);
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics of students and how these may affect learning by demonstrating knowledge and understanding of pedagogy, developmental stages, different approaches to student learning and how prior experiences or background may influence student learning (GTSD 1.1.1, 1.2.1, 1.5.1, 2.3.1, 3.5.1);
- organise content into an effective learning and teaching sequence that incorporates appropriate pedagogies, constructivist ideas about teaching and learning and appropriately addresses outcomes (GTSD 2.1.1, 2.2.1, 2.3.1, 3.1.1);
- demonstrate knowledge of a range of appropriate and engaging resources, including ICT, that engage students in their learning (GTSD 1.5.1, 3.4.1); and
- demonstrate broad knowledge of strategies that can be used to evaluate teaching programs to improve student learning by selecting and mapping outcomes to appropriate activities and assessment strategies and analytic techniques (GTSD 3.6.1, 5.1.1, 5.2.1, 5.3.1, 5.4.1).
