Unit information
Teaching agriculture to senior secondary students, you have an opportunity to inspire the next generation to explore and contribute to this essential sector of our economy in their future careers.
Studying this unit, you will focus on preparing Year 11 and 12 students to complete the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) in Agriculture 2 Unit and Primary Industries.
Analysing HSC agriculture and primary industries requirements, you will explore assessment procedures and techniques relevant to agriculture and technology.
You will investigate and learn about a novel agricultural enterprise and develop your skills in planning a teaching sequence based on that enterprise. You will also develop a long-term plan for teaching over a 10-week period.
You will assess legal requirements, particularly relating to animal welfare in schools.
Examining accreditation and professional development opportunities, you will ensure you understand the professional skills you require as a high school agriculture teacher.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge of, and the ability to apply, models of pedagogy to develop a range of strategies for teaching and assessing Agriculture in Years 11–12 (GTSD 1.6.1, 2.1.1, 2.5.1, 3.1.1, 3.3.1);
- demonstrate the ability to apply understandings of the aims, outcomes, content and requirements of the Agriculture Years 11–12 Syllabus to lessons, lesson sequences and programmes (GTSD 2.2.1, 2.3.1, 3.2.1);
- critically select appropriate resources and present the curriculum to meet the diverse needs of learners in Agriculture Years 11–12 (GTSD 1.2.1, 1.3.1, 1.4.1, 1.5.1, 2.6.1, 3.1.1, 3.3.1, 3.4.1,);
- select appropriate assessment for learning strategies and to use the results for student feedback and reporting as well as lesson and programme evaluations with specific application to the HSC or equivalent (GTSD, 3.1.1, 3.6.1, 5.1.1); and
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of management practices for laboratory and school farm activities in Agriculture Years 11–12, including safety and risk management, budgeting, selecting, storing, maintaining and replacing materials and equipment (GTSD 4.4.1, 7.4.1).
