Unit information
Gain hands-on experience conducting original academic research, and hone skills in critical thinking, problem solving and scientific communication that will help you to stand out in your career.
This unit offers you an opportunity to undertake a mini lab-based research project or literature review. Guided by an academic supervisor, you will develop expertise in an area of scientific interest that you are passionate about.
Extending your capacity for independent learning, the unit will help you to consolidate the knowledge and skills you will need to respond to problems encountered in the rapidly changing world of science and technology.
Prior to commencing the unit, you are required to negotiate an agreed topic with your potential supervisor and seek approval to enrol.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of a complex area of knowledge in a discipline of Science that has been studied;
- interpret and transmit knowledge, skills and ideas to others (specialists and non-specialists), covering a scientific discipline to others;
- apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy, expert judgement and responsibility in conducting and reporting on original research; and
- analyse critically, reflect on and synthesise scientific information, problems, concepts and theories.
