Unit information
In this unit you will explore the sustainable management of water resources in agricultural landscapes. Fundamental hydrological concepts including the hydrological cycle, climate, rainfall, water storage, water quality, evapotranspiration and ecology will be discussed.
The unit also covers the influence of soil properties on water movement, including constraints to infiltration and modification of soil structure; the effects of soil structure and strength on root growth, and hydraulic properties. Irrigation application methods and dryland water conservation methods are explored and critically evaluated.
You will critique water use efficiency in irrigated and dryland systems and explore future challenges to sustainable water management, including the impacts of climate change.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- recommend how water can be managed in a sustainable manner in irrigated and dryland agricultural landscapes;
- explain how fundamental hydrological concepts influence sustainable management of agricultural landscapes;
- evaluate the management of soil moisture and its interaction with agricultural production system;
- demonstrate risk based approach to management of current and future challenges in agricultural systems, including climate change; and
- demonstrate a range of manipulative, observational, interpretive, written and graphical communication skills in order to transmit this information to others.
