Unit information
Broadcast television has created many genres of information and entertainment, with production and programming strategies to match.
In this unit you will take an in-depth look at how television as a popular mass medium is evolving in our contemporary age of media convergence.
Through various case studies you will investigate how television is adapting to the digital environment, and how audiences are interacting with it in new ways. Your primary focus for this unit will be on serialised television crime and detective drama.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate advanced knowledge of a range of television forms and representational techniques;
- analyse and critically reflect on television practices in relation to a variety of television programs;
- undertake indepth research and evaluate materials in order to explore complex ideas related to the study of television, with initiative and autonomy;
- analyse and interpret varied ways in which television content is informed by, and mediates, cultural themes and social issues; and
- interpret, communicate and present complex ideas and arguments, using disciplinary conventions of scholarly writing about media and communications.
