Unit information
Trace the journey of wool through all stages of processing and hone your knowledge of the ways in which new technologies and traditional techniques are applied to transform fibres into beautiful, functional products.
Studying this unit you will explore the fundamentals of raw wool processing in preparation for weaving: wool scouring and carbonising, to remove contaminants from greasy wool, and carding to align fibres.
Integrating your understanding of the role of blending wool and scouring, you will also examine weaving, knitting and finishing for wool yarn manufacture. You will study in-depth the main processing routes for wool yarn manufacture - woven, non-woven, and carpet manufacture.
With a focus on the latest developments in processing and market demand, the unit also provides you with insights into the effect of fibre quality on processing performance and product quality.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of the rationale of blending wool before scouring, scoured wool before carding, carded slivers through the gilling process and so on throughout the processing line;
- demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of the fundamental processes and systems involved in scouring and the three main processing routes of wool yarn manufacture (worsted, woollen and semi-worsted);
- explain the attributes of yarn and the importance of twist and the multi-stage process of spinning; this will also demonstrate the ability to analyse critically, reflect on and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories;
- demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of the relationship between early and late stage wool processing including the effect of fibre properties on fabric quality; and demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of the latest developments in wool processing including producing a fabric that matches the requirements of customers;
- describe and evaluate the main techniques and procedures for spinning, weaving, knitting, finishing, non-woven and carpet manufacture; thereby demonstrating an ability to interpret and transmit knowledge, skills and ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences; and
- critically review and evaluate the current literature on the latest research occurring in this field, also demonstrate the ability to undertake research and apply established theories to a body of knowledge or practice.
