Unit information
Advanced writing skills are essential to successful academic study, and are highly valued in many workplaces. This unit supports your development of these skills across an array of writing genres, enabling you to apply and extend your existing disciplinary knowledge.
When studying this unit you will draw together the key principles and techniques for qualitative research, which are relevant to a broad range of disciplines. You’ll learn strategies of writing that facilitate research and effective presentation of your findings and investigate the process of developing research questions aligned with research methods.
Guided application of this process will foster your ability to work independently on a particular disciplinary topic to refine your writing skills for research.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced understanding of the interrelated roles and processes of qualitative research and writing for the development of knowledge in one or more academic disciplines;
- interpret and evaluate a range of research sources and the basis and limits of their authority;
- analyse and synthesise a range of sources and complex ideas and arguments;
- communicate research findings clearly, coherently and with integrity, using appropriate conventions of academic writing and/or creative modes;
- employ a range of techniques for designing and conducting a research project that calls for independence and originality; and
- participate constructively in informed inquiry and debate on a range of academic and professional issues, in familiar and new contexts.
