Unit information
The short story is a diverse genre that is thought-provoking and thematically rich.
In this hands-on creative writing unit you are offered the opportunity to research and develop a piece of short fiction and reflect on the process.
You will engage in a number of learning activities, including reading and analysing published short stories by diverse authors, writing and revising your own creative work, engaging in peer feedback, and researching and reflecting on your writing process and context.
You are expected to engage in regular writing activities as part of this unit and work collaboratively and respectfully as a creative writing practitioner.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- integrate theoretical understanding and self-reflection into the development and revision of short fiction;
- generate, research and explore concepts in the practice of short fiction through integrated creative, critical and reflective thinking;
- reflect on the processes and purpose of writing short fiction drawing on research, textual analysis and relevant theoretical concepts;
- respectfully and professionally interact with others in planning, writing and editing short works of fiction; and
- recognise, research and reflect on cultural, social and ethical issues in the practice of writing short fiction.
