Unit information
This unit is designed to develop your understanding of young children's problem solving from their exploration of their everyday world.
You will develop an appreciation of children's transitions into mathematical understandings in their everyday life and across the curriculum by recognising and appropriately addressing the range of mathematical thinking in young children.
Moreover, you will implement appropriate learning strategies with reference to relevant national policies and curriculum documents. This unit reflects a birth to eight years focus.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- identify and demonstrate strategies for meeting the learning needs of a wide range of children in mathematics education (CS 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, 2.4, 2.5, 3.9, 4.2, 6.5, GTSD 1.5.1);
- apply an understanding of numeracy teaching strategies across a variety of environments and contexts (CS 2.1, 2.2, 3.3, 6.1, 6.3; GTSD 2.5.1);
- identify and demonstrate verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to actively engage children in play based mathematics learning experiences (CS 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, 5.2; GTSD 3.5.1); and
- interpret assessment of children’s learning for future planning and learning (CS 1.8, 2.4, 3.1, 3.2, 3.9; GTSD 5.4.1, 5.5.1).
